In a significant development, President Bola Tinubu has chosen Dr. Aminu Maida to step into the role of the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). This appointment marks a pivotal change in leadership at NCC.
Dr. Maida’s impressive academic background includes an MEng in Information Systems Engineering, awarded by Imperial College, London, in 2002. In 2006, he further enhanced his academic prowess by earning a PhD in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from the University of Bath, United Kingdom. Dr. Maida’s dedication to learning also led him to complete a Post Graduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship (FinTech Pathway) at the Cambridge Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, between 2018 and 2019.
Before assuming his current role, Dr. Aminu Maida served as the Executive Director of Technology and Operations at Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc (NIBSS). NIBSS, the central switch company owned by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and all licensed Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) in Nigeria, benefited from Dr. Maida’s extensive expertise. During his tenure, he played a vital role in establishing the technical and operational standards for devices used in Nigeria’s financial system, ensuring interoperability.
Under Dr. Maida’s leadership, NIBSS accomplished a significant feat by enabling all terminals and devices in the e-payment industry to accept cards issued by banks and licensed card schemes without discrimination. This achievement significantly contributed to the efficiency and inclusivity of the financial ecosystem.
Before joining NIBSS, Dr. Maida served as the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) at Arca Payments Network, a Nigerian-based FinTech company. His career path also included a role as a Senior Manager at Cisco Systems in the United Kingdom.
Dr. Maida’s professional journey is marked by over 15 years of multi-functional and international experience in FinTech, Telecoms, and Enterprise Technology. He previously worked as a Network Design Consultant at EE, a part of the BT Group, one of the largest mobile communications companies in the UK, from 2010 to 2014. Additionally, he contributed to Ubiquisys, a prominent company in intelligent 3G and LTE small cells, now a part of Cisco, from 2006 to 2010.
Recognized for his technical expertise and commercial acumen, Dr. Maida stands out as a seasoned technical professional who has made valuable contributions in his various roles.
In his personal life, Dr. Maida is a devoted family man, married with children. His appointment to the prestigious position of EVC at NCC demonstrates his unwavering commitment to the development of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector and is anticipated to drive further progress in the industry
