The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, CP Haruna Garba, has urged medical personnel in the FCT to always attend to patients in distress, even without a police report in order to save their lives.
The CP stated this today, at the Command Headquarters, Abuja during a press briefing to acquaint members of the public with the command’s achievements in the fight against crime and criminality, reports Daily Independent.
CP Garba also warned against jungle justice while talking about the alleged cases of male organ disappearance across the territory and the escalating incidents of mob action by irate youths.
While reacting to a question on a recent incident involving Ms Olorunfemi, a victim of “one-chance robbers” who tragically died at the Maitama General Hospital where she was allegedly denied treatment for not providing a police report, the CP said, “It is wrong for a medical doctor not to attend to a patient that is in distress.”
According to the Police boss, it has been in the public domain that, even if the person is an “armed robber” he or she should be alive to defend himself in court.
He stressed, “We have repeatedly told medical personnel at a press briefing that anytime they receive somebody with bullet wounds, they should accept the victim at their hospital, save the person’s life and alert the police.
“There is nothing more than that. As you alert the police, the victim is been treated and the police will come there and do the needful. In this particular case, we have already invited the Chief Medical Director of the hospital to find out exactly whether what happened is true.”
On the disturbing reports of male organ disappearance, CP Garba said, “The FCT Police Command has recorded over 10 cases of alleged disappearance of male organs across the Territory and the escalating incidents of mob action by irate youths.
He disclosed that “It takes the intervention of the Police Command to prevent the loss of life and property and restore law and order. 14 suspects who claimed that their male organs had disappeared were taken to the Hospital where the Medical Doctor confirmed that their male organs were intact and active.
“Consequently, they were charged to court for giving false information and inciting public disturbance. I wish to seize this opportunity to appeal to the residents of FCT to warn their wards and children to desist from raising false alarms.
“In addition, they are enjoined not to resort to jungle justice or mob action as innocent lives may be lost in the process. In the same vein, I wish to advise residents of the FCT to be wary of the kind of vehicles they board.
“It is advised that they should board painted taxis from designated motor parks. It is risky to board an unpainted taxi otherwise known as ‘kabu-kabu’ as they may fall victims to these robbers known as one chance.”
The CP also paraded more than 15 criminal suspects including two ex-convicts, namely Oluwatobi Precious and Umar Ibrahim who were arrested by operatives in the FCT for various crimes, including armed robbery kidnapping, cultism, culpable homicide, and others.
The Command also recovered 36 bags of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp, many assorted weapons, ammunition, a Golf car with Reg. No. DKA 288 RY, grey in colour, iPhone 14 pro max and several ATM cards bearing different names and substances suspected to be cocaine.
Other items recovered according to the CP include “one Ford car, gray in colour with Reg. No. BUU 281 TG (Plateau State). 10 wristwatches, nine cell phones, two long knives, five female handbags, one hammer, one POS machine, and eight power banks were all recovered from the suspects.
“I want to reiterate my commitment and willingness to always work with you to defeat crime in the Federal Capital Territory,” he said.
