In a significant move towards ensuring a safer cyber space in Nigeria, the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre has arrested two individuals involved in criminal conspiracy, identity theft, and romance scams. These arrests follow the Inspector-General of Police’s directive to enhance cybersecurity in Nigeria.
According to an official statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi noted that the suspects, identified as Jerry Okoye and Ifeanyi Nwosu, residents of Panasonic Estate in Idu, Abuja, have both confessed to their involvement in computer-related fraud, particularly in romance scams and identity theft. Substantial evidence retrieved from their electronic devices has further exposed their criminal activities.
The Force Spokesman informed that Jerry Okoye, a former student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), claimed to have been associated with the music industry since 2016 and operates a public relations company. However, during the investigation, he admitted to engaging in fraudulent activities as far back as 2014, primarily through Facebook. Compelling evidence linking him to fraud and romance scams, dating up to the present, has been uncovered.
Similarly, Ifeanyi Nwosu, a close associate of Jerry Okoye, who was arrested along with the first suspect, initially stated that his visit to Okoye’s residence was for music recording purposes. However, he acknowledged having a unique connection with a 69-year-old white woman named Winnie, whom he claimed to be both a fan and a friend. Evidence has emerged indicating a series of financial transactions between Ifeanyi Nwosu and the elderly woman, revealing a deeper connection.
The Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of citizens by vigorously combating criminal activities such as identity theft, romance scams, sextortion, and other cyber-related crimes. The public is urged to exercise vigilance and caution when interacting with individuals online, particularly those they have not met in person.
However, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi called upon all Nigerians and residents to actively collaborate in securing the country’s cyber-space and safeguarding communities from these threats. Protecting Nigeria is a shared responsibility that cannot be underestimated.
