On August 11, 2024, Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima of Nigeria addressed the current economic hardships and food scarcity facing the country, particularly in the Northern regions, during an interview with Radio France RFI Hausa Service. His comments highlighted the administration’s perspective on the challenges and potential solutions.

According to France RFI Hausa Service, Shettima emphasized President Tinubu’s gratitude towards the North, noting, “The President loves the North and is grateful to the North. 63% of the votes came from the North and he is very proud of us. He is grateful and honestly, he’s being kind to us.” This statement underscores the political significance of the region in the recent elections.

The Vice President expressed optimism about the North’s potential, stating, “We have no business with poverty in the North. Allah has blessed us with everything.” This remark suggests a belief in the region’s untapped resources and capabilities to overcome current economic challenges.

Addressing potential criticisms, Shettima acknowledged the political nature of opposition, saying, “But when it comes to politics no matter what you did, your opponent would always look for where to criticize. There will be a time when we shall mount the drum to talk, to explain whether he is kind or not.”

In a significant announcement, Shettima proposed collaboration with prominent Northern businessmen and tycoons to address the economic challenges. He mentioned several well-known figures, including Aliko Dangote, Abdulsamad Rabiu, Dahiru Mangal, Muhammad Ndimi, General T.Y. Danjuma, AYM Shafa, and AA Rano. This approach suggests a strategy of leveraging private sector resources and expertise to combat food scarcity and economic hardship.
