Dele Momodu, a former presidential aspirant for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed concern over the escalating crisis within the party, particularly pointing to the actions of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Momodu highlighted that tensions heightened significantly when Wike began targeting PDP governors who supported Fubara, leading to a complete breakdown of relationships. He noted that the governors felt disrespected by Wike’s remarks, which they regarded as abusive and condescending.
According to Momodu, the situation reached a tipping point as the governors decided to take decisive action against Wike’s behavior. They believed that he had not only mismanaged the political landscape but had also disrespected their friendship and camaraderie. This decision to confront Wike signals a shift in dynamics within the PDP, indicating that the governors are no longer willing to tolerate his conduct.
In an interview on Arise TV, Momodu pointed out that he had expected Wike to deescalate the conflict, especially following an intervention from the president. Instead, Wike intensified his attacks on his fellow party members, particularly targeting his perceived political godson. Momodu reflected on the missed opportunity for reconciliation, noting that rather than seeking to mend fences after the local government elections, Wike continued to engage in aggressive rhetoric.
He emphasized that the turning point came when Wike’s attacks extended to the governors supporting Fubara. This move, according to Momodu, signaled a severe mismanagement of the situation, suggesting that Wike’s comments were deeply disrespectful. He drew parallels to cultural norms in Africa, illustrating how Wike’s language could be interpreted as an affront to the very foundations of respect within their community.
Momodu further elaborated on the consequences of Wike’s actions, indicating that there are cultural sensitivities at play. When a leader belittles their peers, it inevitably leads to a pushback, as individuals assert their dignity in the face of perceived disrespect. The narrative suggests that the governors reached a breaking point, feeling that they had shown Wike enough respect and patience.
He said, “I think the last straw that broke the camel’s back was when we started attacking some PDP Governors who said they were standing by Fubara. I think at that stage, he mismanaged everything. He said none of them born of a woman can stop him, that’s like abusing your mother in Africa.”
