The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has issued a stern warning to parents who falsify their children’s ages to meet the minimum university admission requirements. According to Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of JAMB, such practices not only compromise the integrity of the educational system but also set children on a potentially dangerous path towards corruption and criminal behavior.
Speaking at the Academic and Research Excellence Award ceremony at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Prof. Oloyede emphasized that the minimum age for university admission is 16, not 18. He criticized the growing trend of pushing students into higher education before they are biologically and mentally ready, urging parents to respect the proper educational timeline.
“Primary school starts at age 6, and a child should undergo 12 years of schooling before entering university,” Oloyede stated. He highlighted that institutions like the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have long adhered to this policy, and he called for its broader implementation across Nigeria. Oloyede urged parents and schools to focus on developing students at an appropriate pace, rather than cutting corners that could have long-term negative consequences.
