Lagos State House of Assembly Member Ikeja Constituency1, Prince Seyi Lawal has urged the youths, residents to embrace homegrown food. Seyi Lawal invites them to join hands with the Lagos State Government on home grown farming. He stated this while delivering his speech during the 9th Constituency Stakeholders’ Meeting on Saturday at Awori House, Oregun, Ikeja. He stressed the need of agriculture to minimize hardship, insecurity and impact strongly on foods availability.
The event, themed “Ensuring Food Security for a Sustainable Future: “Youth Participation & Home-Grown Farming”. It was carried out across forty constituencies in Lagos State. Hon. Lawal thanked the Almighty and Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa for making this possible hoping to engage the constituents in agricultural activities to empower them.
Seyi Lawal entreated the youth to go back to the ‘bush kin farming that fed the past generations with fresh crops such as vegetables, yam and millet. He pointed them to his past involvement in health fairs within his constituency and encouraged the youth to take advantage of this, “plant fresh foods around your homes,” he pleaded.
During his speech, Hon. Seyi Lawal thank the Almighty Allah and applaud the Hon. Speaker for the laudable initiative. He underscored that farming experts would be sent all over the constituencies to educate people on innovative home-grown farming procedures.
This step is viewed as the remedy to the food shortage challenge, whose emblem has become the Yoruba phrase, “Ebi npa wa” meaning “We are hungry.”
He also promised that Lagos State House of Assembly will partner the executive to formulate policies that encourages youths to go into farming. “Especially supporting modern method of farming, finance, and market for farmers,” he boasted.
The Ounje Eko launched some weeks back which changed food prices by a quarter was also mentioned as an example of a short term solution. Hon. Seyi Lawal called on residents of Lagos to be part of the process of creating a profitable food system that can help the youths, farmers, and everyone else who needs food.
The guest lecturer from Ministry of Agriculture Comrade Olusola Olubukola urged the people to take a stand to support food production. She further encourage them to seek help for seeds from the Ministry for home vegetable farming if needed. Olubukola also talked of urban farming ideas like the production of coconut in Onigbongbo LCDA to enhance food production.
Onigbongbo LCDA’s Vice Chairman, Barr. Mrs. Olufunke Hassan, representing the Executive Chairman called for awareness creation through familiarization and discussion. She noted, “the awareness targeted at promoting the role of the public in agricultural activities. Olufunke further state the need to engage stakeholders, market women, the youths to enhance proper implementation of home grown agricultural practices.
Leader of the House, Onigbongbo LCDA, Hon. Oluwakayode Opayemi supported the government’s call on Farmer’s use of modern method in farming. He noted that the price of food is gradually increasing and called on all the local governments in Lagos to emulate the act.
APC LGA Chairman, Onigbongbo LCDA, Alhaja Iyabo Aminat Akerele acknowledged the current challenges faced by Nigerians. She however vowed confidence that Nigeria challenges will be surmounted soon.
Akerele displayed her confidence in the current administration “we will soon be victorious under the able leadership of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” she stated. She further hailed Governor Sanwo-Olu for his efforts to contain the problem affecting the state. Akerele also advised Nigerians to exercise patience with the government since the pains and the hunger were being dealt with
