In a video posted on Symfoni TV, a former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo recalled the lack of support from the leading Yoruba social-cultural group during his first presidential run in 1999.
He acknowledged that, despite being a Yoruba man himself, they refused to vote for him.
Obasanjo emphasized that he respected the group’s decision and maintained his Yoruba cultural values by reporting to them regardless of their stance.
He shared that the group eventually supported him in his second term, and he formed a lasting friendship with a clergyman throughout the process.
Through this statement, Obasanjo sought to demonstrate the importance of maintaining cultural values, fostering unity, and building relationships amidst political differences.
According to Olusegun Obasanjo, “In 1999, the leading Yoruba social-cultural group said they would not vote for me, and they did not vote for me. And I’m a Yoruba man. I went to them, and they repeatedly said they would not vote for me. I repeatedly said, ‘Yes, as a well-born and well-brought-up Yoruba man, culturally, I should report to you. Whether you vote for me or you do not vote for me, it does not matter.’ They did not, but in the second term, they did. And I went to a clergy man, and we became the best of friends until he died.”
