Nigeria’s House of Representatives today, Tuesday urged the Minister of Aviation to exempt members of the nation’s armed forces from tollgate fees at all Nigerian airports.
Coming under Order 8 Rule 5 of the House Standing Orders, Hon. Abdulsamad Dasuki, the sponsor of the motion of urgent public importance, emphasised the necessity of exempting members of the armed forces, reports Daily Independent.
He highlighted their unique role in ensuring the safety and security of the nation and its citizens.
It could be recalled that on May 14, 2024, the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, announced the cancellation of exemptions on all airport access payments for VIPs. This decision was made in response to the significant revenue losses these exemptions have caused the federal government.
Also speaking on the motion Mr Dasuki emphasised that the men and women of our armed forces honor our nation with the highest form of service, without reservation.
“They keep us safe from harm, protect our wealth and territorial integrity, ensure safe navigation in our territorial waters, secure our borders, including the Gulf of Guinea, creeks, Sahara Desert, and forests, and combat armed bandits who invade our communities.
“It is important to show gratitude by honoring our brothers and sisters who voluntarily serve under our flag. They dedicate their active years to keeping our nation safe, with some losing their lives and others becoming disabled on the battlefield. Their sacrifices and the effects of their service deserve our deepest respect and appreciation.
“Honoring these men and women in uniform and encouraging fellow citizens to recognize their service to the nation is a meaningful way to appreciate the immeasurable sacrifices they make.”
He further justified his call for exempting armed forces personnel from airport tollgate fees by stating that it could inspire young people to join the military in service to the nation.
“Honoring those who fight for our survival will inspire our youth to enlist in the military, not as a means of escaping unemployment, but as a noble call to higher service to the nation.”
“Members of the armed forces are required to pay for access to our airports, even though they are expected to protect citizens and foreigners alike, both on and off duty, and even as passengers.
“Their services, though remunerated, are invaluable, especially when considering the risks to them and their families. We should not hesitate to show our appreciation in small ways, acknowledging their sacrifices and letting them know we see and value them,” he added.
He emphasised that “If we do not intentionally show our appreciation by extending privileges such as the proposed exemption, our nation risks undervaluing their services and failing to recognize the immense value they bring.”
Before putting the prayers to vote, the motion was amended to include exemptions from payment of tolls at train stations and seaports.
Following its adoption, the motion was referred to the House Committee on Aviation to ensure compliance.
